Who are the Friends?

The Crestwood Library was conceived of and founded by a vibrant and determined group of women in the 1920’s. Three decades later an equally resolute coterie of neighbors established a Friends’ organization to carry on the work of the initial founders.

Friends of Crestwood Library (FOCL) was instituted in 1959 for the purpose of advocacy and support. As of 2020, it is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Our Mission

The mission of FOCL is to supplement the needs of the Crestwood Library through active engagement and fundraising. Our membership dues, donations and grants allow us to create and sponsor programming for the community. The Book Club, Book Chat and Getting Organized programs are all facilitated by members of our Board of Directors. Author readings, Chamber Music afternoons and a myriad of children’s programs rely on our sponsorship. We fund materials not covered by the library budget including books, magazine subscriptions and DVDs.

On several occasions, the Friends have spearheaded the struggle to maintain library service threatened by city cutbacks. Indeed, the Friends have successfully staved off efforts to close the Crestwood Branch entirely.

Our beloved storybook library is approaching its centennial.

We would like to secure another hundred years of service for this community. Please help us continue the tradition by joining us at our programs and by becoming a member of the Friends of Crestwood Library.
